African Woods: collection
Lobi Bateba a Colon or colonial figure 68.5cm high
Bought from Noir d’Ivoire, Paris in 1996, known to be ex-Yasmina Chenoufi collection

A little carving that is finely made and unusually detailed. This bateba is a colonial figure with one hand to the mouth. The use of colonial iconography by Lobi sculptors was to make the image one of greater importance.
The gesture with the right hand may refer to those secret things which are merely whispered during the dyoro, the Lobi initiation rites, and must be kept secret.
