African Woods: collection
  Dagara 16cm high
Bought from Christie's London

A bateba phuwe made by a sculptor living near Nako in Burkina Faso. It is shining with a very dark encrustation of sacrificial material.
I was told that this carving represents a dwarf (as there are dwarfs in the world of men so are there an equivalent in the Lobi world of spirits); it is black because that is the way the spirits wanted it to be - covered with blood.
