  Dagara Bateba phuwe 70cm high
Bought in Accra, Ghana in 1995

This is a good carving, a Dagara from close to Diebougou in Burkina Faso. The eyebrows show the stylistic inluence of the Pougouli who live to the west, further along the Bougouriba river, in the area where cotton is grown.
This type of bateba is either placed in a shrine that is on top of a roof or inside the house, most likely the latter.
All shrine carvings have their own name, known only to the owner and revealed exclusively to him by the spirit of the shrine.
