African Woods: collection

  Lobi Bateba
Bought from Galerie Maine Durieu, Paris in 1997

Lobi works are completely perpendicular in profile. The Lobi sculptor visualises the 5 volumes of his sculpture vertically: head, torso, thighs, lower legs and finally the feet.
Most carvings that survive are made of hard wood, one that is resistant to termites. This ebony-like material imposes on the carvings clear and simple volumes, forms that are unpronounced.
