Lobi Bateba 36cm high Bought from ChristopherGange, Marlborough in 1996.
This is a carving of a man transformed
into a dog, standing like a dog with a dog’s head.
The dog as a killer is thought by the Lobi to be heroic and as such is
considered an animal fit for sacrifice.
These zoomorphic figures are placed in a specially built sanctuary, a room within
the Lobi house.
In the Lobi world of spirits a special role is reserved for sacred animals.
